Egg and Dart aka Cathedral Window Quilting

There is a design that is used in sashing. I have not seen it often as of late.  But it’s a classic.  I have heard it called egg and dart or cathedral window.   I have quilted this in the past with unpleasing results, at least to me.  There are quilt stencils you can use to mark but then you have to have the correct size stencil.  I have used circle templates, but I still wasn’t happy with the results.

Last year at the Vermont Quilt Festival, I purchased the set of Nested Inner Circles from Quilters Rule.  These templates are designed for your hopping foot to be in the center of the template instead of the usual outside. With the set, I can quilt circles from 1/4″ up to 4″ in 1/4″ increments.  I purchased these with the idea of using the smaller circles on some mini quilts.  But have found they work great for egg and dart sashing.

The customer quilt I wanted this design on happened to work perfectly.  The sashing was 5″ by 1 1/2″.  I used the 2.5″ inner circle.  Lining up the center circle marks with the edge of the rectangle, I quilted a half circle. Then moved the template to quilt the second half circle.  In the cornerstones, I used the circle templates to quilt a continuous curve design.  This allowed me to continue through the row without having to stop and start.

This was the easiest way, for me, to create this effect.  I like the way it looks.  So did the owner of this quilt.
